Things I love about Peru: Women with Silly Hats

One of the first things I noticed in Peru was that older Peruvian women had some of the silliest hats in the world. And by “silly hats,” I don’t mean those fun themed hats you can find at Disneyland or baseball caps with the incorrect winning team found in many African countries (like Superbowl XLVI Championships: New England Patriots).  I mean tall bowler hats and “outdated” top hats. Like this: And let me just put this out there: these Peruvian women rock those bowler hats. What kind of Peruvian Women Wear Silly Bowler Hats? It’s not just the skirts. It’s a way of life. These women are typically above the age of 40, from middle to low income. Most women wore their hair long and in braids – occasionally the braids would be woven together at the bottom, forming a circle. Their hair was always black and un-dyed. The women with silly bowler or top hats, for the most part, worked as “shopkeepers,” managing stalls or small shops. However, surprisingly enough, it didn’t seem to be a show for tourists.
