It’s 2:30 in the afternoon and I’m sprawled across the scrubbed tile of a shoes store in the countryside of Ibaraki, waiting for Ryosuke to finish looking at running shoes so we can go home and eat. Okaasan made Okonomiyaki for dinner and I’m starving. “Hurry up and pick something…” I whined into Ryosuke’s phone, as I scrolled through funny pictures on Reddit. “What do you think about these shoes?” He asked. I looked up. Ryosuke was standing there in jeans and a jacket… with a pair of bright pink and purple shoes on his feet. These shoes, to be precise: “Ummm. They’re very pink. And, um, purple.” To clarify, in case he went color blind. “I know, right?” He was smiling. “They’re also pretty cheap! On sale for 5,000yen. ” I laughed. “No but seriously, you should get boys shoes. Remember when you got those girls shoes that hurt your feet?” [Back in America, he bought a pair of white and blue female running shoes because they were on sale, only to later discover they hurt his feet because apparently boy and girl feet are shaped differently… ?] “Uh, these are boys shoes.” He pointed at the display. “See?” [...]
