1. My laugh My laugh has been described as a “horse laugh.” Basically, that means I throw me head back and give a loud, hearty laugh when something is funny. Or awkwardly funny. I also give a full, large smile. It all started a couple of months ago, when I read this article “10 Japanese travel tips for visiting America” – written by a Japanese girl who had a lot of thoughts about America. Number 7 was their laughing habits. I showed the article to Ryosuke, half joking, and asked him whether or not I had a “horse laugh.” Without skipping a beat, he was like “of course you do. I love your horse laugh. It’s so ‘real’.” Since then, I’ve noticed that when most Japanese women laugh, they do so in a petite, cute manner, with a small smile, a dainty and careful laugh, and a hand in front of their mouth, to cover their teeth. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. I’ve met one or two other Japanese women who have a loud, hearty, teeth-showing laugh. But those kinds of people are few and far between.
