One of the fun things about being in an intercultural relationship is that our friends come from drastically different backgrounds (and countries) – so we have silly conversations like this. For example, the first time one of our American friends joked with Ryosuke about the good old “ball-and-chain,” and whether I would “allow” him to go out drinking, he was so confused. And then the first time I happened to be in the room when he was going out drinking with friends and I told him “Bye, have fun, see you tonight,” about half of his friends (aged 20 – 24) were like “oh, you’re so lucky” or “I want to be married.” Which shocked me, because what man at 24 actually wants to be married? Like some of our American friends think he has less fun because he’s married and our Japanese friends think he has more fun because he’s married. Oh, those cultural differences…
