“Home” (the lab where I did research for a year) I’m a Biology major from the University of South Carolina, and my exchange period at the University of Tsukuba was from April 2013 until March 2014. I chose Tsukuba specifically because I loved the idea of being able to go to Tokyo on a whim, but I wasn’t sure if I could handle the big-city life for an entire year. Tsukuba offered exactly what I wanted: A university that was very close to Tokyo, but not in Tokyo, where I could study biology in English. While studying there, I always wished the International Student Center had asked some students to come together and produce a “survival guide” of sorts, being that a lot of useful information at the school traveled by word-of-mouth between the students. These are a few of the things I would have liked to have known before making my decision to study abroad there, arriving in Japan, and during my exchange.
