Comic: “We Need To Talk…”

One of the many wonderful, interesting, and frustrating points about being married to a non-native English speaker is the fact that cultural misunderstandings like this happen all the time. In the beginning of our relationship, Ryosuke would say things like “I need to talk to you” or “I want to talk to you about something” or “We need to talk.” Actually, scratch that. He still says stuff like this pretty often. To him “I want to talk to you about something” means “I kind of miss talking to you, so let’s talk about something random!” Where to me, a native English speaker (American, if that makes a difference) “I want to talk to you about something” means “I’m mad about something, get ready because we’re about to have a huge argument about something.” Oh these cultural misunderstandings. Our life is never boring, at least. I even wrote a post for another blog about all the wonderful things about being married to a non-native English speaker. It’s not all bad.
