I am a Texan freelance writer living in Tokyo. I like to tell people that I am a freelancer, because that’s the easiest way to express the fact that I have several part-time jobs (a very diverse income stream) and work from home. When people ask, I typically say “フリーライター” However, being a freelancer in a foreign country isn’t easy. When I first started out, I was lucky to make $50 a week. As a foreigner who had recently moved to Tokyo, I didn’t have the same connections, language ability, and specialization as other experienced freelancers. I made a lot of mistakes.
