Swallowtail Butler Cafe in Tokyo: Good Times and Attractive, Japanese Butlers

When I first moved to Tokyo, the “maid cafe” craze was in full-swing. Actually, to clarify, the “maid cafe” craze still IS in full-swing, but all of my foreign friends are semi-long term residents in Japan – and so they’re not begging/guilting me to go to a maid cafe “just for the experience.” I went to a maid cafe once. I lasted a whole 20 minutes, before feeling so uncomfortable that I had to leave. My friend quickly agreed. Never again. But what about the girls? That maid cafe was filled with solo men (or in groups of 2-3), mastering the art of being lonely and creepy at the same time. Forget maid cafes, I thought. I want to go to a butler cafe. I want men in suits to cater to me and let me be lonely and creepy, while they fill up my tea and act all professional. The first butler cafe I went to wasn’t actually Swallowtail. It was this Foreign Butler Cafe famous for exploiting their workers. A couple of my friends worked at that foreign butler cafe for a very short time - apparently it pays barely above minimum wage – MUCH less than an English teaching job, [...]
